The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on Wednesday strongly rejected the charge leveled by Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary, who claimed the UPPL’s involvement in the vandalism that occurred at the BTC Assembly on November 29.
Addressing mediapersons at the UPPL’s central office, party Vice-President Abjal Hoque Sarkar dismissed the accusations made by Mohilary, stating that blaming the UPPL and the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) for the student rampage was a “baseless allegation.”
ABSU is a ‘Democratic Student Organization’
Sarkar vehemently defended the ABSU, asserting that it is the largest democratic student organization of the Bodos, playing a vital role in protecting the community. He countered Mohilary’s statement, which had labeled the ABSU and the UPPL as “two sides of a same coin” and noted that many BPF-led council members originated from the ABSU platform.
- The protest rally on November 29 was composed of students from Bodoland University and various colleges.
- The students gathered to oppose the controversial move to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six new communities.
- Sarkar affirmed there was no instigation from either the ABSU or the UPPL, contrary to Mohilary’s claims.
UPPL Touts ‘Congenial Atmosphere’ Under Pramod Boro
Sarkar further used the opportunity to draw a contrast between the current and previous administrations.
“After the BPF-led BTC Government came to power, the unending Melas with gambling being conducted in them had been being organized everywhere which had been completely stopped in the last five years led by Pramod Boro,” Sarkar stated.
He highlighted that the Pramod Boro-led council government has successfully established a “congenial atmosphere” in the region, ensuring that people can live in peace, dignity, and honour by curbing violence and ensuring citizen security.
Sarkar concluded by calling upon the BPF-led BTC Government to focus on maintaining peace and stability instead of trying to “aggravate the situation by blaming others.”
