Biswa Bandhu Sen, the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and a veteran political figure, passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru early Friday morning. He was 72.
Sen had been battling serious health complications for several months. He was airlifted to Bengaluru in August 2024 following a massive cerebral stroke and brain hemorrhage. Despite intensive medical care, he breathed his last at approximately 3:30 AM on December 26, 2025.
Biswa Bandhu Sen was a prominent face in Tripura politics, serving as a four-time MLA from the Dharmanagar constituency in North Tripura.
- Early Career: He began his journey with the Indian National Congress, winning two terms (2008 and 2013).
- Transition to BJP: He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2017.
- Leadership Roles: He served as the Deputy Speaker from 2018 to 2023 and was subsequently elected as the 11th Speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly in March 2023.
Beyond politics, Sen was known for his love for the arts, having been a celebrated theater performer and Jatra artist in his younger years.
State Mourning and Last Rites
The Tripura government has announced a three-day period of state mourning (December 26–28) as a mark of respect.
- National Flag: Will be flown at half-mast across all government buildings in the state.
- Cancellations: All official entertainment programs and government functions have been suspended during this period.
- State Funeral: His mortal remains are expected to be brought back to Agartala on Saturday, December 27, where he will be accorded a full state funeral.
Leaders Express Grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to express his condolences:
“Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji… He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura’s progress and commitment to numerous social causes. Om Shanti.”

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha described the loss as “irreparable” for the state and the party. “I am deeply shocked. The Speaker discharged his responsibilities with efficiency and conducted the house proceedings with fairness,” the CM stated.
