The Assam government, operating from Dispur, has enacted a comprehensive ban on the circulation of all online and offline content found to be glorifying violent jihad and promoting religious radicalization.

The Home and Political Department of the state issued a notification stating that intelligence inputs, cyber patrolling reports, and recent investigations by the Assam Police and Special Task Force (STF) indicate the continued circulation of radical literature, publications, documents, and digital propaganda.

These materials, according to the government, pose a grave threat to public order, internal security, and communal harmony by glorifying violence and facilitating recruitment for extremist groups.

The government highlighted that the measure is essential for “safeguarding internal security and preventing vulnerable youths from falling prey to extremist propaganda.” The order specifically cites fundamentalist organizations, including Jama’t-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMD), Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), Ansar-al-Islam, or pro-AQIS, as groups attempting to incite unrest in the region.

All law enforcement agencies, including the Assam Police, Special Branch (SB), CID, SSPs, and cybercrime units, have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the ban and initiate necessary legal action against violators.

The notification comes as the state deals with organizations attempting to create local unrest, reportedly centered around eviction drives, and trying to “indoctrinate the youth of the state with jihadi ideology.”
