GUWAHATI – The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assam’s beloved cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, has filed a formal case against Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi. The case stems from allegations that the legislator illegally used and misrepresented information from the official charge sheet.
Key Details of the Allegations
The case (13/2025) was registered at the Guwahati Crime Branch following a complaint by the SIT’s Chief Investigating Officer, Rosie Kalita. According to the SIT, Gogoi allegedly:
- Illegally used the charge sheet filed in the Zubeen Garg death case.
- Misinterpreted the specific charges leveled against the accused in the documents.
The SIT had previously submitted a “voluminous” charge sheet regarding the singer’s death to the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on December 12.
The MLA has been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code of India. The sections cited in the FIR include:
- Section 236
- Section 238
- Section 240
- Section 221
- Section 353 (typically related to obstructing public servants or assault to deter duty)
Background
The investigation into the death of Zubeen Garg has been a matter of high public interest across the state. While the SIT recently moved to close a major chapter of the probe by filing the charge sheet on December 12, this new legal development adds a layer of political friction to the proceedings.
