BIJNI – In a powerful display of grassroots activism, members of a local community club in Chirang district successfully apprehended a suspected drug peddler on Thursday, signaling a growing “zero-tolerance” attitude toward the drug menace in rural Assam.
The operation, led by the Doturi Friends Club and Library, resulted in the capture of 39-year-old Sahidul Islam in the Doturi area. The citizen-led intervention highlights a shifting tide in Assam’s battle against narcotics, where civil society is increasingly stepping up to support law enforcement.
The Seizure and Arrest
Following the apprehension, club members immediately alerted the Bijni Police, who arrived at the scene to conduct a formal search and seizure. The operation yielded:
- 10 containers of suspected drugs (weighing approximately 12.52 grams).
- Rs 4,010 in cash, suspected to be proceeds from sales.
- One mobile phone, currently being analyzed for network links.
The suspect and the seized items were transported to the Bijni Police Station. Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and determine if Islam is part of a larger distribution syndicate operating within the Chirang-Bongaigaon belt.
A Growing Crisis in Assam
Assam has seen a sharp rise in drug-related cases over the last few years. The state’s proximity to international transit routes has made it a hotspot for organized trafficking, with youth addiction rates reaching alarming levels.
“This incident acts as a warning to traffickers. The community is watching, and we will not allow our youth to be destroyed by this menace,” stated a representative from the Doturi Friends Club.
The state government and police departments have been vocal about the need for “Jan Bhagidari” (People’s Participation). While the law-and-order machinery has intensified its crackdown, authorities maintain that the war on drugs can only be won when citizens act as the eyes and ears of the police.
The Bijni authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or clandestine sales in their neighborhoods to ensure a “Drug-Free Assam.”
