Guwahati, November 4 – Today marked the deeply emotional conclusion of the life of legendary flutist Dipak Sarma, whose final journey was observed with full state honors at the Navagraha Crematorium. His musical influence, which many considered the very essence of Assam’s soul, was reflected in the tremendous outpouring of grief, as countless fans, followers, and admirers gathered to pay their last respects.
The day’s events began with the arrival of Sarma’s mortal remains in Guwahati. Flown in from Chennai via a specially chartered aircraft, the body was immediately transported to his family home in Ambikagiri Nagar. Here, family members carried out final, private rituals before the remains were presented for a public viewing.
The atmosphere intensified as the cortege reached Seuj Sangha. A vast assembly of people fell silent, a collective expression of sorrow washing over the crowd. In a powerful and heartbreaking moment of homage, the gentle, ethereal sound of a bamboo flute began to play, mingling with the soft prayers and muffled weeping of the mourners.
The final service at the historic Navagraha Crematorium brought the maestro’s remarkable life to a close. While the man himself has been laid to rest, his vibrant and meaningful melodic contribution—a sound that breathed life into the Brahmaputra valley is assured to endure as a perpetual fixture in Assam’s cultural memory.
