The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has taken legal action against Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge following controversial remarks he made during a recent campaign rally. On Wednesday, the organization filed two separate police complaints in Dispur and Silchar, Assam, alleging that Kharge’s metaphors crossed a dangerous line.
The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Kharge on April 6 in Nilambazar, Assam. While addressing the crowd, Kharge used a stark religious analogy to describe the political ideology of his opponents.
According to reports, he suggested that if a venomous snake appears—even during a time of prayer—it must be killed. He then directly compared the RSS and the BJP to such “venomous snakes,” urging that their influence be eliminated.
The RSS didn’t take the comparison lightly. In their complaints, they argued that Kharge’s language wasn’t just harsh political rhetoric, but a “corrupt electoral practice” under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The organization claims the speech was designed to:
- Incite Tension: Provoke hostility between different social and political groups.
- Endanger Safety: By using imagery of “killing snakes,” the RSS argues the speech could be interpreted by some as a literal call to violence against their members.
BJP Demands an Apology
The political fallout was immediate. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad stepped forward to defend both the party and the RSS, calling them “patriotic organizations” that form the backbone of the country’s service.
“These remarks have crossed all limits of political decency,” Prasad stated, demanding an official apology from the Congress leadership.
As election season heats up, the language used on the trail is coming under heavy scrutiny. While political metaphors are common, the RSS’s decision to move from the podium to the police station signals a refusal to let “dehumanizing” language go unchecked.
Whether this remains a war of words or leads to actual legal repercussions for the Congress President will depend on the upcoming police investigations in Assam.
