In a significant update, Google has finally introduced a feature that allows users to change their Gmail username without losing their data. This marks the first time in nearly two decades that users can modify the part of their email address before “@gmail.com,” offering a fresh start for those stuck with outdated or awkward usernames.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet Inc., lightheartedly addressed the update on social media, noting that while 2004 may have been memorable, your email address doesn’t need to remain frozen in that era. He explained that the feature is meant to evolve alongside users as their preferences and identities change over time.

How the Feature Works

With this update, users can select a new, available username while retaining their entire account history, including emails, photos, and files. Importantly, the previous email address doesn’t disappear—it becomes an alternate address. This ensures that any messages sent to the old email will still reach the same inbox. Users can also continue using either address to access services such as YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Drive.

Key Rules and Limitations

There are a few important conditions users should be aware of:

• Username changes are limited to once every 12 months
• Each account can only be updated a maximum of three times
• Users can revert to their original email address if needed
• The new username must be completely unique and unused

Google also advises users to back up their data before making any changes as a precaution. At present, the feature is gradually rolling out and is initially available to users in the United States.
